Katherine Floods 2006

In April 2006 the Katherine River flooded and submerged low lying areas of Katherine NT.

On 10 April Bushfires NT professional and volunteer fire fighters from Cox Peninsula to Alice Springs and most areas in between drove their tankers and fire units to Katherine to help with the clean-up.

Flood victims requiring assistance to clean up their premises were required to register with NTFRS, who would then allocate resources. We were split into three teams for the jobs passed on to us.

Residents were supposed to move all their sodden belongings outside before we moved in for the clean-up, but we didn't enforce that. At one property the owner learned that he had picked a poor spot for his new home under construction. We carried all the sodden building materials out for him. Gyprock plasterboard doesn't like getting wet and disintegrated when we tried to lift the ruined sheets.

The photos were taken by Frank Dunstan and Dave Mullavey, and are in no particular order.

By the time we arrived in town the flood waters had receded and there were just pools of water remaining. There are no dramatic photos in the slideshow and they are probably only of interest to the people who were there.
