Fire Grounds 2009

The following eight photos were taken late at night on Friday 26 June 2009 on a fire ground west of the Blackmore River. Conditions were calm now with dropped off winds allowing controlled back burning operations and a welcome meal break.

Earlier, strong gusty afternoon winds had fanned a wildfire that overran fire fighters and was very difficult to manage. At one stage we fell back for asset protection before regrouping to attack the fire.

We had fire units from Darwin River, Berry Springs, Cox Peninsula, Livingstone, Acacia Hills and Bushfires NT on the fire ground, backed by Johnno Hayden's front end loader.

Shouted abuse from a passing vehicle that we should inform people before burning didn't help my mood, having been on fire grounds since 0800 hrs that morning. Sorry, mate but we don't plan our wildfires which makes it difficult to give people prior notice.
