Roles and Functions of the Northern Territory Fire & Rescue Service

The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (in conjunction with Bushfires NT) is the primary provider of fire and rescue services throughout the Territory.

NTFRS also provides a vast range of other fire and rescue services including:

  • Rescue – road accident and other types of rescue
  • Chemical and hazardous material incident management
  • Community awareness and education on fire and safety issues
  • Juvenile Fire Awareness and Intervention
  • Fire safety compliance inspection of commercial buildings and building plans
  • Administering legislation relating to fire and safety in buildings and on rural property
  • Hazard abatement
  • Fire safety advice to the general community

NTFRS are responsible for managing bushfires in the more populous parts of the Darwin rural area, while Bushfires NT are responsible for the outer areas, approximately 99% of the Northern Territory.
