Operation Turkey Flier

posted ‎‎Oct 30, 2008 6:19 PM‎‎ by Jeff Wilson

Help us bring a Happy Thanksgiving to our community’s neediest families!  Your gift will enable SERVE to support the programs that give Thanksgiving baskets to more then 1,400 individuals and families.  Operation Turkey also helps us throughout the year as we provide supplemental foods to our area’s neediest families.  Those served are identified by local social service departments and through SERVE’s client lists.

You can get involved in three ways:
  1. Donate food
  2. Donate money
  3. Volunteer

Empty Bowls – October 24 – 4:00p - 8:00pm

posted ‎‎Oct 10, 2008 5:59 AM‎‎ by Jeff Wilson

Even in a community such as Manassas people experience hunger.  You can help make sure everyone has enough to eat by attending Empty Bowls on Friday, October 24 from 4-8 p.m.  Guests purchase a handmade pottery bowl and then enjoy a simple meal of pasta or soup, and other delicious food donated by area restaurants.   All proceeds benefit S.E.R.V.E.   The event will be held at The Rock, 8730 Sudley Road, located next to Manassas Baptist Church (formerly Marstellar Middle School).  Price is $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 and under.

Need: Multiple items both on-going and one time

Status: posted 8/30/2008

Details:

Below are further immediate volunteer needs as identified by Jan Hawkins, Volunteer Director:

  • We ALWAYS have a need for meals to be done for the shelter residents on weekends and holidays.  The day that is most challenging is Sundays, since that’s always a big family day for many people.  Meals can be done either in our full-service kitchen, or can be prepared at the church or someone’s home and brought to the shelter.  If time is a factor, a group can always prepare a meal in advance and drop it off either just prior to a weekend, or the day of the meal itself.  The kitchen has ample cooler and freezer space to safely store meals.  We have some groups who prepare meals on site, and other groups that find it easier to do meal prep at home and either bring it in to serve or drop it off for the meal.
  • Our need for paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper is an ongoing issue.  The shelter alone goes through at least 60 rolls of toilet paper in a week’s time, so it doesn’t last long around here.  Paper towels and trash bags of all sizes are another constant need.
  • The shelter staff likes to give every child who enters our shelter a quilt that they can keep.  The quilts don’t have to be huge, just something the child would enjoy and can take when they leave our facility.
  • We have some events coming up that will have a need for volunteers:  Empty Bowls on October 24 at Manassas Baptist Church, and Operation Turkey in November.  Operation Turkey volunteers will be needed beginning November 8. Our kickoff meeting will be in mid-September, and as soon as I know the schedule, I can provide it for you.  Anyone who is interested in volunteering should contact me for more information.
  • The Christmas holidays have ample volunteer opportunities – parties or holiday meals for the residents, adopt a shelter family for Christmas gifts. One church always comes just prior to Christmas and does a holiday pageant for the shelter residents.
  • Many of the residents’ rooms in the shelter are in need of repainting and being refurnished.  When we first moved here in 2002, many churches and businesses “adopted” a shelter room, then painted and furnished that room.  After six years, many furniture pieces need replaced, plus the walls are in need of new paint.  A group from Bethel can adopt a room if they would like to do so.
  • Dishwasher is broken
  • Need to replace washers and dryers

SERVE - immediate need (8/26/2008)

Need: volunteer drivers for an 8:30a - 12:00p shift for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  This is both an immediate and an on-going need.

Status: posted 8/26/2008
Details:

Jeff – I have a late breaking volunteer opportunity to offer the Bethel Lutheran members.  The Food Warehouse is in Desperate need of volunteers who can drive the SERVE Food Warehouse vans on any one day Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Drivers would be needed to make runs to various local grocery stores and restaurants to pick up food being donated to the SERVE Food Warehouse.  Drivers would use the SERVE vans, not their own vehicles, and would be trained prior to going out on runs.  Hours are 8:30am to 12:00pm.  The prerequisites are to be 21 and older, and sign an insurance form with us.

Mary Jo Dick, Food Warehouse Manager, has told me she is down to one driver each of these days, because some of our summer drivers have returned to their teaching jobs.  Interested volunteers should contact me, either by phone at 703-367-6742 or email me at jhawkins@serveinc.org.

Mary Jo is on vacation until September 10, but I can do the paperwork and introduce prospective drivers to the Food Warehouse staff to get things rolling.  If you have any questions about this, please let me know.  Thanks, Jeff!

SERVE - unmet needs (8/20/2008)

Need: personal hygiene products for men and women

Status: on-going need
Details:
Before our trip to SERVE on 8/24, I asked Jan about their unmet needs.  This was her response:

As an immediate need, the shelter has told me they have an Urgent Need for personal hygiene products such as men and women’s deodorants, disposable razors, toilet paper, paper towels, powder laundry detergent, tall kitchen trash bags and contractor size trash bags.  If you want to get the congregation at Bethel to do a quick collection of these items, I know the shelter would be most grateful to you all.
