On 21st May, 1881, Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons founded the American National Red Cross, an organization established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters.

On 22^nd May, 1843, a massive wagon train set off on the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri.
