JPAU20SEP02GR02 Exercise Swift Eagle Date Taken:20 September 2002 Pic by:Warrant Officer Class Two (WO2) Gary Ramage Townsville based soldiers from the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment deploy from SA70 Blackhawk helicopters from the 5th Aviation Regiment as they secure Rockhampton Airport. The deployment, a part of Exercise Swift Eagle, was followed by the evacuation of civilian role players by C130 Hercules aircraft from the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.. Over the past twelve months the Army has been liaising with local authorities and preparing for the exercise. Defence personnel from around Australia and New Zealand are involved in week long exercise. The support of the Central Queensland community has been a key element in the success of the exercise, with local authorities being extremely supportive of exercise activities in their respective regions. Three naval ships, HMAS Kanimbla, Tarakan and Brunei will be off the coast of Rockhampton providing amphibious support to the exercise. Five C130 Hercules, four Caribou, 11 Black Hawk helicopters, four Chinook and several Huey helicopters will occupy the skies to ensure fast and effective evacuation of the evacuees. The supporting ground force will include units from 3rd Brigade Headquarters, a commando company group, 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Group, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Airfield Defence Squadron, 386th Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron and participants from the Army Special Forces. Exercise Swift Eagle is designed to test the leadership, equipment and training of the Australian Defence Force, ensuring it can cope with the demands of a modern peacekeeping-style operation.
