Comet P/17 Holmes E-500 and Olympus OM Lens 300mm 30sec at f4.5 iso 100 Comet Holmes was discovered by British amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes on November 6, 1892. Its 7.9 year orbit passes beween the orbits of Mars and Jupiter with a brightness of 17-19th magnitude. Normally only visible with large amateur telescopes, the comet underwent a million fold increase and is now shining at a naked eye visible, 3rd magnitude. Now heading away from us, the comet’s tail is facing away from us so all we see is the outer coma of dust and gas sublimating from the comet’s surface. Holmes
