Riverdriver Hazelnut Porter Riverdriver Hazelnut PorterRiverdriver is brewed with an infusion of natural hazelnut flavor to complement the roasty flavors endemic to the porter style – a pairing that makes sense given the popularity of hazelnut coffee. We found that this interesting approach to a porter does indeed work out quite well. An attractive brew, it offers up a deep, dark brown color with garnet hues at the edge of the glass when held to the light. The hazelnut aroma is most certainly apparent, along with underlying coffee notes. There’s a lightly sweet creaminess implied by the aroma, as well, with a vanilla-like hint. On the palate, Riverdriver presents a good roasty malt base with notes of toasted caramel and coffee grounds, all overlaid and complemented by hazelnut. Residual sweetness is mild to moderate, maybe finishing a bit drier than it starts, and bitterness, though weighing in at a firm 48 IBUs, comes through quite balanced on the palate. Serving Temperature: 50-55°F Alcohol by Volume: 5.7% Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 48 Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug Malts: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Caramunich 2, Wheat Hops: Perle, Willamette Lion Imperial Lager Lion Imperial LagerThis amped-up lager pours a clear golden color with a bright white head that’s surprisingly robust and persistent for a lager of this strength (high alcohol levels are often bad for head retention). The nose is quite vibrant with aromas of sweet biscuity malts, a mild cellar-like mustiness, hay, Scotch whisky, some fruitiness akin to grape juice, and an herbal, grassy, leafy hop note. On the palate this beer is quite sweet, with grain notes amidst flavors of over-ripened citrus and honey. In fact, there is a certain character reminiscent of mead (a fermented honey drink). Alcohol notes begin coming through a bit on the mid-palate, offering a countering bite along with the relatively mild hop bitterness. Though the alcohol notes don’t come through as much as you might expect for a nearly 9% ABV brew, this lion will prey on you as it lurks – so be alert! Expect a round, smooth, and slick feel to this big lager, which finishes with some lingering sweetness, and a warming sensation in the belly. Cheers! Serving Temperature: 40-45°F Alcohol by Volume: 8.8% Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Flute Lion Stout Lion StoutLion Stout is an impressive beer from the moment you begin pouring. This is a super dark, rich-looking brew, with a gorgeous chocolaty head – don’t even think of drinking this one from the bottle; you need to enjoy its appearance while slowing sipping away and pondering this stout. Big, rich, dark chocolate aromas are immediately apparent, which combined with notes of creamy sweetness offer a chocolate cake impression. Molasses and an underlying prune-like quality also appear, along with mild grassy hops and a somewhat meat-like hint. The flavor is big and bold – very roasty, with strong char and smoke-like notes. Molasses and a deep, dark, prune and raisin fruitiness runs throughout, as well. Despite the deep char-like roastiness, bitterness never goes above moderate and is well-balanced with the moderate residual malt sweetness. Finishes with a drying, scorched-earth, soil-like impression in the fade. A world class stout, and a world classic. As strange as it sounds, this beer would pair extremely well with both barbeque dishes and a chocolaty dessert – perhaps a chocolate-chip chocolate cake, served a la mode? Enjoy this beast! Serving Temperature: 50-55°F Alcohol by Volume: 8.8% Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Snifter Special Amber Special AmberThis Vienna lager does indeed pour a clear, medium amber color. We found the aroma to be very well balanced with bready malts accompanied by a lightly spicy hop aroma. Notes of caramel and a hint of toffee come through as well. We found the flavors a bit more forceful than the aroma with a complex and sweet maltiness, notes of caramel, mild toastiness, and some apple-like notes increasing with warmth. The American hops come through with a bit more of a bitter counterpoint than is typical of the style, but the malt still remains the star of the show as the flavors expand across the palate within a round, smooth, medium body. A very nice brew, and surprisingly superb with baked ham and mac & cheese. Serving Temperature: 45-52°F Alcohol by Volume: 5.0% Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22 Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Mug Malts: Caramel, Caravienna, Munich, Pale Hops: Cascade, Mt. Hood
