I'm taking Intro to Digital Photography starting in a couple weeks. The photography book that is used as the "required" text for the course has some tips on shooting flowers (buy from a florist, don't just find them, shoot against black or white, indoors, etc). We had dinner right across the street from the nearest florist, so I figured we could walk over and see if they were still open when we were done with dinner. They were, although their selection was not spectacular, we did pick up a pretty multi-colored Gerbera Daisy. Then I used my ghetto studio equipment: a $20 k-mart tripod, the back of a 16x20 black foam core from my county fair submissions, and a white wall. Speedlight pointed at wall to get backlit on the flower, my hand shading the flower from the light (which produced quite by accident the gradient in the background.) Although I'm definitely more used to (and perhaps more comfortable with) the photojournalistic style (walk around and shoot things as they happen), learning to exercise detailed control over the shot is definitely something I need to do. Again, I should get some extra lights. Also, I'll be glad when my wireless remote shows up (a few more days), the 10-second timer countdown is a bit much for this sort of thing, but I don't really want to be vibrating the camera with the instant shutter release.
