"Millionaire's Club of the Washoe"
"Millionaire's Club of the Washoe"
Most of the Comstock's old saloons are found on 'C' Street in Virginia City, Nevada, the town's main artery and business district. Spawned by mining magnates, artists and men of letters who sought to hobnob in luxury, the club gained a reputation for luxurious accommodations and was a household name. Many notables of the time would cavort through the Club’s exclusive quarters which housed one of the finest libraries east of San Francisco, an elegant billiard room, a parlor adorned with Italian marble and bronze statuettes, and a wine room that boasted an elaborately carved black walnut sideboard. The Club’s membership roster read like a Who’s Who of Comstock history, and the pages of the Club’s guest register were emblazoned with the signatures of General Ulysses S. Grant, General Robert Sherman, Mark Twain, actor-lecturer Artemus Ward, actor Edwin Booth, railroad magnate Darius Ogden Mills and others of international reputation. The club began with sixty charter members in 1875, each of whom paid $150 each to join. The Club purchased its original building on 'B' Street but after extensive renovation and less than five months later, it was consumed by a fire that destroyed much of Virginia City on October 26, 1875. In 1876, a new Washoe Club was erected on 'C' Street but, by the time it was back to its renewed glory, hard times had fallen on Virginia City and the Comstock. By 1897, the Club had ceased to exist. Today, commercial properties occupy the first floor of the "Old Millionaire's Club of the Washoe" while the upper two stories are unoccupied. The building is an un-reinforced masonry structure and, as such, has several deficiencies relative to its ability to resist seismic events. Some have said that the building is haunted thus gaining it a modern-day reputation as one of the premier historical/paranormal destinations in the West.
