Vintage Trek frame
Vintage Trek frame
This is a late 1970s Trek 710 frame and fork with Campy dropouts and Campy headset. Although the logo on the tube is from the mid 80s, the 710s weren't made past 1981. It was probably re-painted and re-logo'd by Trek at the request of the original owner. But who knows... The serial number indicates that it is a 710. Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing, fully lugged, handcrafted in the U.S. of A with Italian extras. But alas the front fork is misaligned. Local bike mechanics tried their best to fix it, but it is too warped, and there is a dent in it, so I'm going to have to replace the fork. The frame itself is properly aligned and structurally sound, despite a small dent in the seat tube. Not bad for a frame that cost me a grand total of $0. Measurements - Seat tube: 56 cm (center to center) Top Tube: 56 cm (center to center) Dropout spacing: 126mm Weight with fork: 6lbs. The frame might be a bit small for me. (My Bianchi is 59 cm.) But i wanted something a bit smaller for a fixed gear. This is going to be an ongoing project of learning how to build up a bike. Eventually, it will be a fixed gear commuter/pubcrawler--probably not until this summer in San Francisco (when i'm actually earning $$) unless i find all the other components for free. I like the fact that it doesn't have any braze-ons on the down tube for shifters. And these old 710s were excellent frames according to the guys over at vintage-trek.com. Thanks to Klaus for giving this to me. And thanks to Skip at vintage-trek.com for giving me the info about this frame. The dupont sparkly blue paint is gorgeous... i'm gonna remove that worthless sticker on the chainstay. Anybody have a spare steel fork? Perhaps one that has a nice flashy chrome job!?! How about a bottom bracket? stem and handlebars? seatpost? crank? flip-flop hub? Didn't think so...

Apparantly, an hour on a fixed wheel bike equals two hours on a geared bike for exercise effort... so, always keen to maximise on exercise, I took my first ride on a single speed bike yesterday . All simple fun flying down the single lane roads of North Yorkshire until you reach the first hill up. Uh-oh.
