  • Computer cooling is required to remove the waste heat produced by computer components, to keep components within their safe operating temperature limits. Various cooling methods help to improve processor performance and/or to reduce the noise of cooling fans.
    test
  • Take measures to check the quality, performance, or reliability of (something), esp. before putting it into widespread use or practice
  • Give (someone) a short written or oral examination of their proficiency or knowledge
  • put to the test, as for its quality, or give experimental use to; "This approach has been tried with good results"; "Test this recipe"
  • any standardized procedure for measuring sensitivity or memory or intelligence or aptitude or personality etc; "the test was standardized on a large sample of students"
  • Reveal the strengths or capabilities of (someone or something) by putting them under strain
  • trial: trying something to find out about it; "a sample for ten days free trial"; "a trial of progesterone failed to relieve the pain"

Bench Testing my gPC motherboard
Bench Testing my gPC motherboard
This motherboard was an "open box" purchase. Only $39 from NewEgg.com ... I received it today, and the board smelled burned, like something bad had happened to it. I was worried it was dead, or damaged.... But when I got home, I cautiously tested it and everything seems fine. I let it run for hours, crunching prime numbers and calculating Pi to the 8 millionth place. No problems. Why did I buy this motherboard? It's going in my server. The server uses about 93 watts of electricity. It is an old power hungry but slow AMD Athlon 1000. I hope to get the power usage down to 33 watts with this VIA C7 1.5Ghz motherboard. It should be possible. Notice the tiny little cooler for the CPU? It's so small -- and when running, it's just room temperature! So this thing sips power. I will post results soon. If I achieve my power savings, the electricity I will save will offset the cost of this motherboard in only a few months! Not bad, huh? Plus less pollution from wasted power.
Test Fit
Test Fit
Just made it! By the way, the fan is mounted 'backwards' in this photo just for a quick clearance test. I think I didn't bring the bezel downstairs with me for the fitting. I recently had to trim off 1/8 on an inch from all 4 screw mounts so that this fan doesn't sit so deep into the case. I bought a Zalman 9900 Max CPU Cooler and a few test fittings revealed that the top of the cooler was in contact with the fan when the side panel was closed. Now the fan is still seated far enough away from the dust filter in front and the CPU cooler behind it.
