46797 Black Bear I saw this Black Bear before it was aware of me. There was no breeze and the air reeked of rotting salmon as it worked its way up the shallow stream. I had time to scramble up the embankment, but decided to stay put and see what might happen. This was the moment it looked up and made eye contact, and truthfully, I felt a little uneasy. I stayed very still, sitting by the water, and made a series of shots as it moved past me and continued on upstream. No problem. Scanned from the original Kodachrome 64 slide, August 1989. Uncropped. 300mm lens, tripod. Yes, it was a close encounter... Don't use this image on websites, blogs or other media without explicit permission. © James R. Page - all rights reserved.
