hugBest Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.

Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,400 college, high school and middle school campuses across the country and internationally. Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the 50 United States. We have accredited international programs on six continents with additional country programs under active development.

Our six formal programs – Best Buddies Citizens, Colleges, e-Buddies®, High Schools, Jobs and Middle Schools – will positively impact more than 400,000 individuals this year. Best Buddies also is systematically implementing our 2010 initiative that will witness the organization's continued significant growth, both domestically and overseas. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute services to the community that equate to more than $70 million USD.

Even though Best Buddies has advanced tremendously in our short existence, many areas of the country and many regions of the world still lack programs to help people with intellectual disabilities become part of mainstream society. Our goal is to continue expanding nationwide and at the local community level, while more broadly engaging the global community through our programs.

We started a chapter here at Brownsburg High School during the 2006/2007 school year. This is a student led organization and is overseen by Miss Carter. The chapter presidents have been Ceciley Starkey, Hannah Burris, Brittany Glaze, and Ali Moore. Our chapter has a team of officers that meet weekly to organize and plan the monthly events. Listed below are some facts about our chapter...
  1. Buddy pairs must meet once per month outside of school.
  2. Buddy pairs must attend the monthly chapter party.
  3. Buddy pairs must have weekly contact (talk in the halls, talk on the phone, email, sit at lunch, maybe have a class together, write notes, text message, etc.)
  4. This is a student led organization. Miss Carter will be at all monthly chapter parties. The other time the pair hangs out is totally on their own.
  5. This is a two way friendship. If the peer buddy isn't calling, the buddy should call. Everyone must remember that many students are in sports, academic teams, special olympics, have jobs, etc. Trying to find a time to meet takes work and planning to make happen on both ends.
  6. Even though the buddy or peer buddy isn't able to make the chapter party, you should still attend. This is a time to meet other students your own age that you may not get to meet or see at school.
  7. We will post all information about events/parties on our Best Buddies Calendar. Please look at that regularly to make sure you don't miss anything!
