So, what's the deal? Do references matter? Do employers even check them anymore? What's the protocol for providing them to a potential employer? Who are the best people to include as references? And, if an employer doesn't call any of your references, is it a bad sign?
While the definitive answer to any of these questions depends on the employer, overall, yes, references do still matter. The process has just changed.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jill Angel thought she had it made. After a wide-ranging career that included teaching and broadcasting, she took early retirement in 2005 from the California Highway Patrol, where she'd risen over 23 years to assistant chief.
The plan was for her to stay home with her two daughters, now 10 and 13. After a breakup at home, a house refinancing and a recession, she worries she'll never get out of debt. She's eager to find a job to supplement her retirement income, which amounts to half her full-time salary.

"In every downturn, there's opportunity," said Ernie Post, director of Kutztown University's Small Business Development Center. "That's the difference between the true entrepreneur or what we call the necessity entrepreneur.
"The latter start businesses because they're recently unemployed and maybe don't want to be put into the position of relying on someone else for employment. Real entrepreneurs will leave that secure situation and go off on their own to pursue the economic opportunity."

Auto racing in Berks County has done so much to bring race fans from all states and areas in Pennsylvania outside of Berks. Money being spent for lodging, food, fuel and other items inside Berks County has done much to keep some businesses alive. The Reading Fairgrounds saw race fans from all over the country converge even if just for a night or a weekend. They spent dollars our economy otherwise would not have had.

"Employ thy time well." - Benjamin Franklin
What are you put on Earth to do?
It's a simple question that requires a moment's reflection before you respond, because I believe it holds the clue to why you're spending or wasting time on your brief sojourn on this Earth, and time, as Benjamin Franklin wrote, is not to be squandered for it's the stuff life is made of.
