Membership

Best way to learn more about membership/become a member is to come!

Regular Meetings –  We meet each Tuesday at the Berkeley City Club, 2315 Durant Ave., for lunch from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a speaker/program from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  If you cannot make our meetings, email us to talk about serving!

Board Meetings –  The Board of Directors of our Club meets once each month. Each October the Board schedules the day and time for the coming year. Any member may attend these meetings. New Members, upon acceptance into the Club, MUST attend at least one Board Meeting to familiarize him/herself with procedures of the Club.

Financial Obligations –  There is a one-time initiation fee of $75.  Dues are $240 per year, paid semi-annually at $120 in April and October. Younger new members receive special consideration for dues and assessments. Tuesday meals are currently $20. Members are "fined" (normally $1) for such offenses as talking out of turn, celebrating a special occasion, failing to shake hands with others, gaining publicity, or failing to wear a Kiwanis pin. These funds and voluntary Happy/Sad Dollars (e.g., paid to tell personal anecdotes) offset club administration.

Attendance –  All members should attend regularly to benefit from the camaraderie of meetings and be current on Club activities. A weekly newsletter (The Kollegiate) provides written information, but individual participation is vital. Members maintain "perfect" attendance, which is recognized annually, by making up at other Kiwanis, Key Club or Circle K club meetings, attending our Board meeting, and participating in community projects.

Interclub Meetings –  Each member should attend an Interclub meeting in our area at least once each year.  This is a group activity and counts as regular attendance (make-up). We are in the habit of winning the Division Interclub activity award each year.

Projects –  Our Club’s focus is to serve the community, particularly its youth. We sponsor clubs for students of UC Berkeley (Circle K), as well as Berkeley and Oakland Tech High Schools (Key Clubs). We also donate to worthy causes. Members participate in service projects and fund-raising activities to provide funding for these projects and services. Through our public charity, The Kiwanis Club of Berkeley Foundation [(501(c)(3)], we award scholastic scholarships (~$40K per year) to graduating seniors from Berkeley, Albany and El Cerrito High Schools, and also summer camp music scholarships (~$1500 total per year).

Funding –  Operating costs of the Club are covered through dues, fines and Happy/Sad Dollars (Administrative Budget). All funds raised from the public (net of direct project expenses) are returned to the community through projects and donations (Service Budget).
