Community Service and More... The ultimate goal of the Kiwanis Club of Berkeley is to serve the children of Berkeley and its neighboring cities. That includes supporting the students in our local youth clubs, performing hands-on projects, holding fundraisers, and participating in other special events. The projects are youth-targeted and local, and are held almost every week, usually on Saturdays. We welcome community participation and try to organize projects for ages 10 and up. Join us! About our Events Youth Clubs – We are very proud of our thriving youth clubs: UC Berkeley Circle K, Berkeley High Key Club, and Oakland Tech Key Club. UC Berkeley Circle K, which is over 100 members strong, annually wins many awards and is one of the top college service organizations in California. The equally energetic Key Club at Berkeley High… And the Key Club at Oakland Tech… Sponsoring these clubs is richly rewarding as we watch leaders develop before our very eyes. Service Projects – Our
dedication to serving the children in our area takes the form of many
ongoing projects. Each spring we back the Young People’s Symphony
Orchestra (YPSO) with our own concert. Other annual events include
handing out books for Reading is Fundamental (RIF) and storytelling at
DEAR Day (Drop Everything and Read) at Oxford School. We were a major
volunteer group helping to create Totland at Aquatic Park and building
improvements at the Berkeley Rose Garden. Our two most popular events
of the year are our weekend excursions to YMCA’s Camp Gualala and the
Cazadero Music Camp where, supported by our youth clubs, we make
much-needed improvements prior to the busy summer season. Lastly, one
of our proudest moments each year is the awarding of college
scholarships, which totaled $40K in 2007 and are made possible by
endowments to our own club foundation from current and past members. Special Events – Beyond our Tuesday lunch meetings, we enjoy each other’s company as we serve and socialize at several events throughout the year. We have three blockbuster fundraisers each year – our highly spirited Holiday Auction, our booth at the Solano Stroll with our popular rocking horses and Entertainment Books, and our Oktoberfest celebration. We also participate in many worthy programs sponsored by Kiwanis International, such as our ongoing drives against Iodine Deficiency Syndrome and pediatric trauma. Of course, there are even more ways that we have fun while supporting all our service programs (e.g., interclub meetings and conventions). |
