Robinson's Woods, Cook County, Illinois Robinson's Woods was bought by the Cook County Forest Preserves from Alexander Robinson's (Chief Che-Che-Pin-Qua) offspring. The County has preserved what looks to me like most of the land granted to Robinson in the 1820's for evacuating the survivors of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. He took them up through Michigan to a safe haven on Mackinac Island. Parts of the preserve are heavily used and others are not. Many users of this preserve do not fully appreciate what a special place this is. About a quarter of mile from this location is the Robinson's Family burial ground. Stories of strange occurrences abound from this area near the old family homestead. The strong smell of lilacs in the dead of winter, the sounds of indian drumming, wood being chopped and ghostly faces appearing in photographs. Not really sure about the truth of those stories but Robinson's Woods is a very important natural corridor in our highly urbanized area. Cook County Q&A
