Joinery Conservation

Oldbury  was built by James Atkinson between 1827-1831. Situated near Berrima, the house has retained much of its orginial joinery and layout. It is believed the cedar used in the two front reception rooms & vestibule was cut from the property. The fine proportions & joinery detail shows both the use of late Georgian style derived from the English tradition & the limitations of colonial craftsmanship, finishes & tools.

Louisa Atkinson, the youngest child of Charlotte & James, was born at Oldbury in 1834. She would become a significant amateur botanist, writer & journalist. Her mother, Charlotte, was the author of the first children's book published in New South Wales, A Mother's Offering to her Children, which contains a short account of life on the property.

Upstairs in the mid bedroom which would have served as the original nursery, a poignant cipher can be seen scratched on a board in one of the window sets - James, then Atkinson, the son of the first James, had left his name upon this fascinating house.

A fictional account of the Atkinsons has recently been published, The Dark Mountain by Catherine Jinks.
