About Me

I'm Visiting Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Middle East Studies Center at the American University in Cairo.

I did my PhD in Middle East Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. It's a sociological and cognitive study of nationalism in Egypt from the early 19th century to the 1960s. This article, published in International Journal of Middle East Studies, presents some of the results.

You can follow me on Twitter, where I post links related to current social and political developments, in English, French and Arabic.

For about a year I wrote an Arabic-language blog on social science, but I haven't had time to work on it recently.

I used to work in computer programming, and I've started some Free Software projects, like FreeMarker and CamlTemplate.
I've also helped translate some Free Software into Arabic.

I've contributed technically and organisationally to activist and non-profit groups such as the European Social Forum and Attac.

I was born in New York City in 1969, and have spent roughly 30 years in the US, eight in Britain, three in Egypt and one in France. You can also read my CV.
