Catanduanes: From Mining to Eco-Tourism
Catanduanes is an island province of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region. Its capital is Virac, as of 2007, the population of the province is 232,757. Blessed with abundant natural resources; rainforest, waterfalls, endemic species, fish, caves, streams, rivers, white-sand beaches and man-made attractions - old spanish-built churches, the island had remained under-develop, many pointing it's woes to natural causes like typhoons and severe amount of rainfall. The lack of information in decision making, led some local executives to embrace mining, but was abandoned on the 11th hour upon learning its environmental impact.
The mining company projects it would be an "unprofitable" business venture so the exploration was discontinued. External factors such as the demand and prevailing price of coal in the world market were considered.
