Steinway Street is a commercial street in Astoria, Queens. I was born in New York and moved to Puerto Rico when I was four. But my grandmother stayed behind for some more years, and I visited Astoria every Christmas and summer. I remember all outdoor life with my grandmother revolved around Steinway Street. In the 80s, it wasn't as sophisticated as it is today (it now hosts more upscale stores like Victoria's Secrets and such), but it was a street busy with trade. Many storefronts had those slot rides for kids, and I would constantly ask my grandmother to take me. She patiently accompanied me while I rode every single machine in Steinway Street. This is one of the two only machines I saw on my recent visit to Astoria, on October 2010. My grandmother passed away nearly a month ago after a long, bumpy old age and 95 years of love. I had scheduled a trip to New York that was supposed to be ten days after her passing. I had thought of going to Astoria and seeing my childhood haunts. I had desisted of the idea because I thought I would get sad, but my husband insisted. It was the best thing to do that day. I enjoyed so much discovering I remember Astoria as if I had been there yesterday. I loved being able to go to the building where my grandmother cared for me for months on end and made me as happy as a only she could have made me. So I will dedicate these humble Hipstamatic pics of Astoria, Queens, to my grandmother, Alicia Rodriguez, who loved her apartment in Astoria so much, yet chose to leave it so she could be near me and help my mother raise me.

Kids Playground - Fun@Reids House

The newly built thatched roof Fun@Reid's house, (a Santana House) located between our two tennis courts, features a children's pool, an extended outdoor playground with a slide and a Wendy house with abundant indoor space for children to play. It is open to guests between 3 and 9 years old; daily during the holiday period between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm and 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) the rest of the year. There is the option of having lunch onsite. The Fun@Reid's house offers DVD equipped TV, computer, electronic games platforms, traditional games and toys.
