Staff Appreciation Week was spectacular this year thanks to co-chairs Jeanette Haupt and Karen Broughton and their fabulous committee; Melissa Dimock, Holly Hagen, Amy LaMoure, Cheryl Pupshis, Debra Cornett, Christy Cioffi, Jean Jungblut, Tammy Mule, Mary Williams, Kelly Groves, Nancy Strigle, Julie Forman, Ned Broughton, Julie Stokes, Susan Thweatt, Kristyn O’Reilly, & Laurie Lerman. This week long event, which had a Preakness theme, celebrated staff with breakfast, lunch, desserts, snacks, gifts, new indoor games, flowers, school supplies, and messages from the children. Thanks again to all who sent in items that week. The staff felt appreciated and loved all week long!

Wishing everyone a fun and safe summer!

Watch D.O.G.S. Program

More than 100 men participated in the Watch D.O.G.S. program this year. It was wonderful to see so many dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, and even a staff member’s dad in the classrooms interacting with our children and making a positive difference in their lives. The program officially ends June 9th. Thanks to both the Watch D.O.G.S. and staff for helping to make this new program such a success. Watch for information to come home in early September regarding next year’s Pizza Kickoff.

Market Day Summary

Thank you to all those who purchased items this year from Market Day.  The total profit for the school was $2,282.73.  Next year we are also planning some new incentives—earn a gas card, raffles for students, and in February the option to buy-to-donate sales.  We will give families an opportunity to buy food to donate to the Elkridge Food Bank.  See you in the Fall!

Box Tops/Campbell’s Soup Labels

Please continue to cut and save your labels (UPC codes for Campbell’s) as well as Box Top Labels over the summer as we receive either money or points for purchases from your trash!  Send them in next September.

Kids & Family Summer Festival

The non-profit organization, Dedicated To Youth Foundation, (www.dedicatedtoyouth.org) is having a Kids & Family Festival to raise funds to support their programs to fight obesity in children, develop social skills, and build self-esteem. The event will take place on Sunday, June 22nd at the Ridgely’s Run Community Center in Jessup , MD.  For more information, please visit their website.

Enhancing Education Through Technology

Maryland PTA and its’ 200,000 statewide members support continued federal funding of the Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant Program at the 2005 level of $496 Million. The primary goal of this program is to improve student achievement through the use of technology in elementary and secondary schools. Maryland PTA is committed to broadening the educational opportunities for children and youth in Maryland to help every child reach their potential.

Congress is starting to work on its funding bills for FY 09 and now is the time for you to weigh in on the importance of the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) program. Earlier this year, the President called for the elimination of the EETT program in his proposed budget. Before the House and Senate put forth their FY09 appropriations bills, we urge you to send a letter to your congressional representatives asking them to save EETT.

Go to: http://capwiz.com/edtech/issues/alert/?alertid=11361201&type=CO  to enter your zip code to send your letter to the House and Senate asking to save EETT and to fund it at the FY05 level of $496 million. Every letter generated during this crucial time makes a difference. Even if you already took action a few months ago, please send another letter and spread the word to your friends, family and coworkers. Your voice matters!

Tell Congress to KEEP AMERICA COMPETITIVE and save funding for EETT!

Stay Safe in the Sun

Great summer weather means children will be spending more time outside enjoying the sun and the surf.  Here are sun safety tips for keeping your children safe this summer.

·       Keep babies under 6 months out of the sun

·       Dress in light-colored lightweight clothing

·       Wear brimmed hats

·       Wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15

·       Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration

·       Stay in the shade whenever possible

·       Protect your eyes by wearing protective sunglasses

Visit www.epa.gov/sunwise/kids.html for fun and interactive games about sun safety.
