    oil spill
  • An accidental or intentional discharge of oil which reaches bodies of water. Can be controlled by chemical dispersion, combustion, mechanical containment, and/or adsorption.
  • An oil spill is a release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term often refers to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters.
  • (Oil Spills) May be old or recent. Sometimes, the spilled oil comes from an "accident" but can also be a chronic problem along the oil pipelines that feed the electricity grid, in refuelling areas at airports or in a neighbourhood where residents refuse to properly dispose of their used motor
    shut off
  • block off the passage through; "We shut off the valve"
  • isolate or separate; "She was shut off from the friends"
  • A device used for stopping a supply or operation
  • The cessation of flow, supply, or activity
  • stem the flow of; "shut off the gas when you leave for a vacation"
    valve
  • A membranous fold in a hollow organ or tubular structure, such as a blood vessel or the digestive tract, that maintains the flow of the contents in one direction by closing in response to any pressure from reverse flow
  • a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it
  • A device for controlling the passage of fluid through a pipe or duct, esp. an automatic device allowing movement in one direction only
  • control consisting of a mechanical device for controlling the flow of a fluid
  • A cylindrical mechanism in a brass instrument that, when depressed or turned, admits air into different sections of tubing and so extends the range of available notes
  • device in a brass wind instrument for varying the length of the air column to alter the pitch of a tone

According to BP, a deepwater oil spill was "unlikely," and "no mitigation measures other than those required by regulation and BP policy will be employed to avoid, diminish or eliminate potential impacts on environmental resources." BP's 2009 Initial Exploration Plan. Eleven deaths and 1,900,000 - 3,250,000 barrels of spilled oil later - *updated Plan A - Blowout Preventer (failed) Plan B - Robot Repairs (failed) Plan C - Shutoff Valve (failed) Plan D - Containment Dome (failed) Plan E - Top Hat (failed) Plan F - Insert Tube (failed) Plan G - Top Kill (failed) Plan H - Junk Shot (failed) and now Plan I - Riser Cap (only capturing a portion of it) Full shut off of the leak through a relief well is at least two months away ... assuming things go smoothly. We are still a long way from the light at the end of this tunnel ...
