treadmills
- A device formerly used for driving machinery, consisting of a large wheel with steps fitted into its inner surface. It was turned by the weight of people or animals treading the steps

The central boss
On the tour of Beverley Minster roof the guide operated the treadmill to raise the central boss. There is a special cradle where the workmen can rest it if they actually need to winch supplies or tools up into the tower. There is a whole workshop up there!
