What were 2008-09 staffing levels in Bellevue secondary school libraries?
How many new books were added to middle school libraries in the past three years? What were the average number of books checked out of secondary school libraries in 2008-09? What is the estimated value of each secondary school library? What are the teacher-librarian staffing levels at local school districts and private schools? The history of teacher-librarian and library assistant cuts in the Bellevue School District: 1999-2000: 2 classified staff who did processing at the district level are eliminated 2001 - Bellevue HS cut to .5 FTE 2003 - Interlake HS cut to .5 FTE 2004 - Odle MS cut to .5 FTE when the teacher-librarian retires 2006 - Newport HS cut to .4 FTE when the teacher-librarian retires--later increased to .9 FTE 2007 - Interlake HS classified staff cut to .5 FTE 2008 - Information Literacy curriculum developer position cut to .5 2008 - Tyee MS cut to .6 FTE when the teacher-librarian retires 2008 - Highland MS and Odle MS classified staff are eliminated (libraries are locked when the .5 FTE teacher-librarian is not in the building) 2008 - Tillicum MS library assistant is eliminated. 2009 - All secondary school librarians are reassigned to positions outside the library. 2010 - Elementary teacher librarians are presented as a possible budget cut. Fortunately, public surveys reflect a low tolerance for cutting back or eliminating elementary librarians and the Fiscal Advisory Committee votes to remove them from the list of budget cutback options. Amount saved by removing teacher-librarians from libraries: $500,000 source: Ann Oxrieder, spokeswoman for the Bellevue School District (Seattle Times, May 20, 2009) Please note that the savings will be smaller since the secondary school libraries that did not have aides in 2008-09 will be hiring an aide to staff the library. |
