In the early eighties, Jo Bogaert was a multi-instrumentalist in the margin of the New Wave. He succeeded however to release his own long player  called None of them are green in 1983. Even though, it was not a great success.  At the same time he plays bass in a Cold Wave band White Light, inspired on the Velvet Underground. 

From 1984 on he works as a solo artist from his home in Aalst. He regularly uses his alter ego Thomas De Quincey on the credits and he manages his own private label, called Clip Records. On that label he releases from 1986 on some of the first Belgian New Beat productions. The Colonel Bogey Band was he’s first project on Clip Records. But more successful are the releases as « Nux Nemo » and « Acts of Madmen« . As « Nux Nemo » he releases the first New Beat full elpee called « Chinatown » in 1987. For these releases Bogaert clearly was inspired by the German bands « 16Bit » and « Off« .

Typical elements in Bogaerts New Beat are the slow rhythm, the heavy bass, the samples and the ethnic influences. These characteristics will shape the blueprint for virtually every New Beat 

release in Belgium during the next 2 years. This makes Jo Bogart an important element in the 

evolution of New Beat.

Nux Nemo´s « Hiroshima » hit’s the BRT Top 30 in November 1987. During 1988 he will release over 20 vinyl’s on Clip Records. Thereafter, he will be one of the first producers to distance himself from the genre which is getting more and more commercial. In 1989 he gets fortunate to be the producer of « Technotronic« , an Euro Dance formation. « Pump up the Jam » will be Belgians biggest selling single ever. Up to today, Jo Bogaert remains a known remixer and producer for all kinds of music.

Vanaf 1984 werkt hij nog uitsluitend solo vanuit zijn woning in Aalst. Naast zijn eigen naam, gebruikt hij ook vaak de naam Thomas De Quincey. Hij beheert eveneens zijn eigen label, Clip Records, waarop uitsluitend zijn eigen muziek zal verschijnen. Vanaf 1986 brengt dit label de eerste Belgische New Beat producties uit onder de naam The Colonel Bogey Band. Maar opvallen doet Bogaert voor het eerst met Nux Nemo en Acts of Madmen. Met Nux Nemo brengt hij in 1987 zelfs de eerste New Beat full LP uit: « Chinatown » . Voor deze releases laat Bogaert zich duidelijk inspireren door de Duitse platen van Off en 16 Bit.

Kenmerkend zijn het trage ritme , de zware bassen, de vele samples en de etnische invloeden. Deze kenmerken zullen tijdens de twee jaar die hierop volgen niet toevallig de rode draad vormen bij praktisch elke New Beat release in België. Je kan rustig stellen dat Jo Bogaert aan de Belgische 

muziekindustrie de blauwdruk van de ideale New Beat plaat heeft bezorgd.

Met de single « Hiroshima » haalt Nux Nemo in november 1987 zelfs de BRT Top 30. Tot eind 1988 zal hij op Clip Records nog een 20 tal andere releases uitbrengen, alvorens zich als één van de eerste van het commercieel geworden genre te distantiëren en door te breken met Technotronic, een eurodance formatie. Hiermee zal hij in België de één na meest verkochte single ooit uitbrengen: « Pump up the Jam » . Tot op vandaag blijft Jo Bogaert een bekend remixer en producer.
