The Great Beer Tasting June 15, 2009

Beer Club 2009

On June 15, 2009, thirteen friends met me at Duncan's Pub for the mother of all beer tastings I've ever been to.  On the menu were Bubba Burgers, Hot Dogs, beef & Cheeses from Wisconsin, Blacktone Brewery's Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Chips, various finger-foods, and most importantly, the BEER!  Pacing slowly, we managed to taste 37 beers.  To me, one of the highlights of the night was doing a vertical of Blackstone Brewery's bottle aged "Stephanie's Dubbel" from 2002, 2003, 2006, & 2009. This beer rocked my world when I first had it in 2002. 2003 was my favorite year according to memory and it was again in the side by side comparison.
Here's a list of the beers sampled with the Beer Advocate rating (A to F) and RateBeer (overall percentile and then up to 5 out of 5):

That's five beers rated at 100, one 99, three 98's, four 97's, and nine more in the 90's.  Wow.  This is one incredible tasting!  The overall average rating came to 86.8 including one rated as low as 39.

The overall winner by consensus was the New Glarus Belgian Red otherwise known as the "Wisconsin Cherry Beer." We did a side by side comparison to Kasteel Rouge (which used to be my favorite cherry) and the New Glarus obliterated the Kasteel.   Dark Lord was definitely a huge hit coming in with the highest rating combined from both Beer Advocate and Rate Beer.  After that -- it was anyone's call.  We had so many really outstanding beers.  At the end of the night, we also experimented with mixing several of the beers.  One really good one was the Hop Devil with OBP2.  As far as the Cofee Stouts -- Pisgah Valdez was the most praised.  IPA's went to Hoppin Frog with Titan very close. I personally loved the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe.  Honorable mention also to Dogfish Head which really is a category all it's own. It is so hard to compare some of these beers to each other.  Several of us also agreed that if some of the beers were tasted "solo" and not in the same night as some of the other HUGE beers, that they would fare much better.

Remember to respect beer and tell EVERYONE you know to BOYCOTT Bud/Miller/Coors! They are the evil mafia and they do so many under-handed things to prevent this type of beer from being sold in our state as well as to keep placement out of stores if a good beer does make it into TN.  Support your local brewers!!! Make sure and let them know how much you appreciate them brewing in TN where the highest tax is paid on alcohol of ANY state.  Boscos, Blackstone and Yazoo ROCK!
