Frescoes, St. David Gareji Monastery - Georgia
Frescoes, St. David Gareji Monastery - Georgia
These frescoes depict many key events in Jesus' life, including his arrival in Jerusalem, several miracles, etc. They are located in one of the many chapels that comprise the upper complex of the St. David Gareji Monastery; this one in particular called the Chapel of the Annunciation, houses some of the more interesting and complex frescoes. Despite centuries of wear and more recent vandalism, they remain testimony to the Orthodox faith and the Monks who have guarded it over the centuries, and they contain some pigments which remain unidentified to this day. They are one of the few treasures that remain on this site, having survived countless invasions and attacks, the Soviet era, and modern-day graffiti by foolish visitors.
