God & girl

posted ‎‎17 Aug 2009 06:14‎‎ by Joanne Bergenwall

There was a girl
in the eleventh grade
named Valerie
who told me
I would do great things
for God.

I've been trying to write a poem ever since.
- Linford Detweiler 2007, The Great Commission (http://www.overtherhine.com/poem.php?id=16)

...la plus belle des ruses du diable est de vous persuader qu'il n'existe pas!
...the devil's best trick is to persuade you that he doesn't exist!

Christmas by Luenig

posted ‎‎11 Dec 2008 18:37‎‎ by Joanne Bergenwall   [ updated ‎‎29 Jan 2009 14:39‎‎ ]

I see a twinkle in your eye, so this shall be my Christmas star and I will travel to your heart: the manager where the real things are.

And I will find a mother there who holds you gently to her breast, a father to protect your peace, and by these things you shall be blessed.

And you will always be reborn and I will always see the star and make the journey to your heart: the manager where the real things are.
- Michael Luenig, Christmas

i thank You God

i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
- E.E. Cummings, XAIPE (This poem was used by Eric Whitacre for an a capella SATB chorus titled "i thank you God".)

Transcending and including

posted ‎‎7 Nov 2008 01:51‎‎ by Joanne Bergenwall   [ updated ‎‎7 Nov 2008 01:54‎‎ ]

Maybe the evolutionary sequence really is from matter to body to mind to soul to spirit, each transcending and including, each with a greater depth and greater consciousness and wider embrace.
Ken Wilber, A Brief History of Everything, p42

God song

posted ‎‎6 Nov 2008 13:16‎‎ by Joanne Bergenwall   [ updated ‎‎20 Nov 2008 12:29‎‎ ]

My house was built for loving not a theatre of war
I take the poison for the cure
But he's my man and I've been doing him wrong
Yeah he's my man and I've been doing him wrong
And I'm praying for the strength not to carry on

I've watched and learnt to lead a decent life
But meanwhile I'm dying inside
Cos he's my man and I keep doing him wrong
Yeah he's my man and I've been doing him wrong
But I'm praying for the strength not to carry on

I was built for loving not playing at war
And I leave justice in the good hands of the law
But he's my man and I've been doing him wrong
Yeah he's my man and I've done him wrong
But I'm praying for the strength not to carry on
- Beth Orton

The great use of life is to spend it for
something that will outlast it.

True happiness

Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true
happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but
through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
- Helen Keller
