Catboats have always been one of my major interests in this maritime journey. From sketching, painting and building models of them. To attending, when possible, CBA functions in New England, I have held this small craft in high regard. In this shadowbox, I feature catboats at dock and under sail in and around Jetties Beach. Right before the turn of the century, this was a favorite area for both islanders and tourists who frequented Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard during the summer. Between 1890 and 1910, record numbers came to the islands via steamboat and by catboat to Jetties Beach. In the morning when the difused light of the sun touches this work, the sails are highlighted and display beautiful shadows on the background in two dimension. Even in natural light, the viewer can enjoy the subtle shadows. However, the objective of the presentation remains the same. From a distance I orchestrate my concepts so to have the entire work appear as a painting. Nantucket is a beautiful island, especially during its quiet period. I have done many works reflective of the island, but enjoy the shadowboxes as these truly parallel the New England maritime in ways unspeakable. I'm blessed to have the vision to bring these unique pieces to the public -for their enjoyment.

In this photo one can get an idea of how a shadowbox can enhance an area. With a little savvy of mixing antiques with contemporary, the shadowbox now becomes part of the decor without overpowering the supporting accents. Themes in a shadowbox are important. Not just any theme, but a subject that can arrest the eye and tell a story while delivering a pleasing effect to the mind. To this end, my collectors are serious about their subjects and want concepts that address a certain period in time (with accuracy). For me, it becomes a task to combine a scene in painterly fashion; but overall, while experimenting with the positioning of items within the 'box', I find ways to deliver the message that goes beyond the original idea or natural thought. This Nantucket scene is just a small corner of the task... There's more. Much more.
