Activism Meeting Minutes: October 18th, 2011
Recycling (Environmental committee)
· Mr. Brown’s class is willing to empty recycling bins
· want to have bins for more than just paper
· need signs and announcements indicating what goes into each bin
· could get receptacles specifically for paper (i.e. slit in top of a lid) ->these can be purchased from Home Depot or could get tech class to make us some
Movember
· going to have 3 week Movemeber (senior guys can shave for grad photos if they want to and still be eligible to participate)
· should be getting promo material this week
Movember “To Do List”
ü TV (Lovett or Umbach) -> used for promo and to show progress of moustaches
ü Order posters/promotional materials
ü Announcement (once promo materials arrive)
ü Go class to class (date and teacher notice) -> volunteers
Monetary prize?
*/Graduation picture time/day changed for next year?/*
Halloween for Hunger

Activism Meeting Minutes: October 4th 2011
Free the Children
-want to start sending Stop the Bop (Intl/Soc. Understanding) money to Free the Children instead of SOS Village
-with Free the Children we can choose to send money to a village (which they choose) for water, schools, health, education, for Haiti relief, etc.
-can donate the money monthly or all at the same time
-we would receive regular updates
-need to first raise the money, and then decide which area to donate to
-start working on this in November
Environmental Committee (Recap of last week)
-last week Katharine Hashimoto came in and talked about recycling @ BCI
-she decided we need an Action Plan (by thanksgiving):
-1. Need to find out if there are recycling bins @ Victoria
-2. Need to do inventory of recycling bins
-3. Katharine Hashimoto will get us more if needed
-recycling committee will need to meet sometime this week to make action plan
Halloween for Hunger
-trick or treating for canned food, not candy
-after voting, unanimous decision is that we want to do a competition with Assumption, while also involving Dufferin
-if the Expositor is informed we could promote BCI activism, as well as help to inform general public to have cans on Halloween
-Stephanie (in charge of Media) - look into getting Expositor to cover the story |

Activism Meeting Minutes: September 20th 2011
-better to have facebook event pages for individual events, rather than one facebook page for activism
-meeting minutes will be sent out every Wednesday or Thursday
Committees and Committee Heads
Service/Social Local
-committee head: Allie Humeniuk
-this committee handles the Book Drive, Blood Drive, etc.
International Understanding/Social Intl.
-committee head: Monica Pierce
-handles Movember, Stop the Bop, 30 hour famine, etc.
Environmental
-committee head: Danielle Holder
-handles recycling, composting?, etc.
Response
-committee head: Krushangi Patel
-handles disaster relief efforts, political issues, etc.
Recycling
-recycling at B.C.I. has not been very successful in the past, looking into new ways of separating different types of recyclable items
-want to possibly have a meeting with Activism and the School Board’s head of recycling initiatives
-current recycling bins are being used as garbages
-to fix this, could have recycling bins (like the ones at Tim Horton’s) that have pictures and are separated into paper, plastic, etc. (could have about 5 of these receptacles around the school in atriums and caf)
-problem is that receptacles are expensive
-could team up with tech/woodworking to make recycling bins/design our own
-could have bins in each classroom especially for reusing scrap paper – would need teacher approval
-need to use reusable (NOT plastic) water bottles at Activism events – could use water jug and bring own bottles?
-recycling has not been taken seriously in past – need to educate custodians/some teachers on how to use them
--looking into getting a large recycling bin – could get paid to fill it with paper
-could get group of people together to go and plant trees? – teach others importance of the earth
-Rotary does tree planting in Spring/Summer
Other
Ron’s idea: have Activism go out to elementary schools and educate them about some Activism initiatives; will cause more of the public to get involved in Activism and positive media attention
Food Drive: to be successful need to advertise, make appealing for students to participate (contest?), have a central area to deliver food and make it short enough to hold people’s interests but long enough to give them chance to bring in items
