Back Country Horsemen of Western North Carolina
Back Country Horsemen of  Western North Carolina was organized in 2008 to address the increasing need to maintain horseback riding trails on public lands. We are a chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of NC.

Back Country Horsemen are a national organization that work with federal, state, and local agencies to preserve and maintain public trails so that everyone has the freedom to enjoy them. As a service organization, we are able to assist public agencies to manage recreational equine use on public lands. Another of our primary purposes is to educate horsemen and other trail users in the low impact use of the backcountry environment.

We welcome anyone interested in promoting and protecting trails and equestrian access to public lands. We hold membership meetings in addition to work rides, educational clinics, trail rides, and other events.

Our Mission

    1. Perpetuate the common sense use and enjoyment of horses in America’s back country and wilderness areas and especially the back country and wilderness areas of North Carolina and the Southeastern United States.

2.Work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use.

3.Assist the Government and private agencies in their maintenance and managements of said public resources.

4.Educate, encourage, and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public commensurate with our heritage.

                    5. Foster and encourage the formation of new state Back Country Horsemen organizations.

2011 Volunteer hour Report

BCHof WNC turned in a total of 1370 hours of volunteer service in 2011. An additional 367 hours was spent in travel time. We traveled 9517 miles in our personal vehicles, 10,200 of those miles were hauling stock. We got
2 more members chainsaw certified and now have 11 members certified in First Aide/CPR. We spent several day's (and nights) in April clearing trails in the GSMNP and have done several trash collection trips at primitive sites throughout the year.
Great job !  Keep up the Good Work !
