Bergen County Academies Wins $2,500 SkillsUSA Timberland Pro Grant

Bergen County Academies was recently one of fifteen SkillsUSA chapters in the nation to be awarded the $2,500 SkillsUSA Timberland Pro Grant. State Secretary Billy Bauer and community service teammate Amanda Campen spearheaded the grant application. The funds will be essential in allowing the club to overcome financial hurdles associated with a large community service project. The project has a focus on environmental leadership; it will educate students in the school about the risk of environmental irresponsibility and restore the Hackensack River. The chapter is very grateful to Timberland for their generosity and helping them execute their community service project.

BCA SkillsUSA's chapter officers attended the SkillsUSA state fall leadership conference held at NJPSA Headquarters, Monroe Township on October 22, 2008. The students fostered their leadership abilities to improve their local chapter through participation in workshops facilitated by the State Officer Team. They spoke with a county freeholder and asked intriguing questions about leadership and public policy.  During the opening ceremony of the conference, State President Isabel Parilis addressed the audience about the election theme of this year's conference and challened the audience to return to their chapters and implement the leadership skills they attained at the conference. She conducted the "Qualities of Leadership" workshop and State Secretary Billy Bauer conducted the "Organizing for Involvement" workshop. Delegates from the BCA chapter got a first hand experience of the election process as they voted for three new SkillsUSA Regional Presidents.

SkillsUSA Award Ceremony

Washington Leadership Training Institute

posted ‎‎Oct 3, 2008 1:23 PM‎‎ by Isabel Parilis   [ updated ‎‎Oct 7, 2008 7:43 PM‎‎ by Billy Bauer ]

During the week of September 20th, State President Isabel Parilis and Vice President Katerina Melekos attended the Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI). WLTI offered students advanced training that focused on the skills needed to be champions at work, in the communities and in their personal lives. The conference also focused on developing advanced leadership, citizenship and employability skills. Students took part in congressional visits, touring the Smithsonian Institution and Washington area monuments and the opportunity to earn National Statesman award.

The following are reflections from our state leaders:

Isabel Parilis, State President
“WLTI was an incredible experience on many different levels. First and foremost, to be in the incredible company of over 250 other passionate and devoted SkillsUSA leaders was quite the experience. It was evident that everyone wanted to be there and moreover, felt honored to be there. Interacting with the national staff, alumni and even Tim Lawrence, the executive director, gave me more insight into how the organization functions. One of the highlights was a panel of congressional aides who worked directly with a committee on education. They briefly spoke, giving their opinions on important issues to us (students and teachers) such as No Child Left Behind and Perkins Funding. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to ask questions.

Washington DC also had a profound effect on me. The whole city is just a monument to how wonderful our country is. The monuments, individually, are all very impactful but the greater impact comes from the city as a whole.”

Katerina Melekos, Vice President
“My Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) was by far the most memorable SkillsUSA programs of my life. I learned so much and loved every second of it.Izzy and I attended leadership and characteristic building courses. On the third day we were training in public speaking and one of our trainers said "Remember people never care how much you know, until they know how much you care." It made a really big impact on my life because it made me see situations out of a different prospective. WLTI has impacted my life in many ways, and attending it was by far the greatest experience ever.”

State President Isabel Parilis with Executive Director of SkillsUSA, Tim Lawrence
