Chair's Message.
I’d like to wish you all a Happy New Year from the IG committee and highlight the many activities of the Industrial Group in the coming year. We have now filled our IG slots in the BCA Spring Meeting, with sessions including data collection and analysis, ‘almighty blunders’ and complementary non-ambient techniques. In addition, it’s the IG’s turn to organise the teaching plenary, which, I’m delighted to say, will be given by Prof Simon Billinge.
In addition to the Spring Meeting we have a great program of meetings planned. In March we have a joint BSSM/IG meeting on resisual stress at the University of Manchester.
In May we’ll hold a two day meeting on XRPD and XRF. The XRPD day is entitled ‘Between the Sheets’ and will deal with sheet structures including clay minerals. The XRF day will be a more general meeting, but will include Earth Science contributions, and is called 'Blanket Cover'. This meeting is kindly sponsored by PANalytical and Analysco, and there is still time for more sponsors to come forward.
In September there will be a subsidized visit to the PANalytical X-Ray tube factory in the Netherlands; the visit will include a factory tour, advice on care of X-Ray tubes, and a set of technical presentations. Places are limited to 25, so please book early. The IG committee would be interested in hearing from other organizations about tours of their facilities. To round off the year, in November we will be having a two-day meeting at Diamond, which will be an excellent opportunity for industrial scientists to hear about the facilities available and possibly have a tour of the storage ring. More information about these meetings can be found inside the Newsletter and on the IG website.
And speaking of websites...I’d like to express my thanks, and those of all the IG Committee, to David Taylor for his development of our new website, which is going live as I write.
This is my last contribution to the Newsletter as Chair of the Industrial Group, although I hope to remain on the committee, and before I go, I’d like to give a hearty THANKYOU to my fellow committee members for their support and enthusiastic contributions over the last three years.

Editorial
Firstly, Happy New Year to you all and welcome to this addition of the BCA Industrial Group’s Newsletter.
Our Autumn 2009 meeting which was held at the World of Glass St.Helens. Thanks to all those who braved the atrocious weather to get to St.Helens and make the event the success it was. Over 30 people attended the meeting which was very good considering we were (are?) in a recession and there are tighter controls on travel within many organisations. It was particularly nice to see a number of young crystallographers giving presentations at the meeting. The presentations were excellent and everyone enjoyed a very interesting tour of the Victorian Glass Making ‘cone’ building whilst dodging the heavy rain! Also contained in the Newsletter is a summary of Industrial Group meetings that are planned for the coming year. Plans for the BCA Spring Meeting are now well advanced and, as ever, the Industrial Group will be making a significant contribution to the meeting with is sessions spread over three days. This year an Alun Bowen Lecture by Dave Taylor will introduce an ICDD workshop to help you get to grips with the extensive and advanced capabilities for Phase ID and data mining.
A back to back XRF and XRD) meeting, 12th to 13th May, at the British Geological Survey (BGS) will complete a busy first half of the year. The second half will see us visiting a X-ray Tube factory in the Netherlands and thanks goes to PANalytical for organising this (see page 10). A further highlight of the year will be our Autumn Meeting which will be held at Diamond (see page 11). This is an excellent venue that will allow attendees to take a tour of the ring and selected beam lines. For many this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to do this and at the moment we are determining the costs for the meeting which appear to be quite reasonable.
That’s it for now. Enjoy your Newsletter.
