Survey

The Northern Burgenlanders arrived in the US in the 1880’s, a generation earlier than the Southern Burgenland emigrants. The Northerners came from the area east of the Neusiedler See.  Their towns included Andau, Apetlon, Halbturn, Illmitz, Pamhagen, Tadten, Walla, Monchof, St. Andra and Podersdorf, among others.

In order to learn more about our Burgenland ancestors, we ask that you provide some information to be shared with others. This information, when assembled, will provide a wider view of those people who settled in the upper Midwest area.

The St. Paul MN Catholic Parishes of the Assumption, St. Agnes, Saint Bernard, and St. Francis de Sales have extensive records of the births, marriages and deaths of these people.

Other Midwest settlement occurred in Marshall and Day Counties in South Dakota, Morton County in North Dakota, and Stearns and Morrison Counties in Minnesota.

The information that will be most valuable includes:

  • Immigrant family names, including variant spellings
  • Villages in Austria-Hungary
  • Dates of arrival in the US
  • Dates of birth and death
  • Marriages, including the wife’s maiden name
  • Children’s names
  • Town and street addresses in the US
  • Church affiliation and parishes

 Additional useful information –

  • Reasons for emigration
  • Routes followed to the US, including ship name
  • Employment in the US
  • Fraternal organization membership

 Extra credit information –

  • Family Tree
  • Photographs, letters, clippings and other memorabilia (We will make copies and restore photos)
