West Branch residents are invited to an
informational meeting about a new local youth mentoring program.
The meeting, led by representatives of Big Brothers Big
Sisters, will be Tuesday, May 15 at 6:00 pm at the West Branch Public Library.
Anyone who is interested in learning more about how to become a mentor is
encouraged to attend.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County has partnered
with the West Branch Community School District to offer a community-based youth
mentoring program to children and adults living in West Branch. Through the
partnership, BBBS hopes to match 20 West Branch youth in one-to-one
relationships with caring adult mentors.
Speaking at the meeting will be a staff representative from
BBBS and current BBBS volunteers. For more information, call Jill Kromminga at
319-337-2145 or visit www.bbbsjc.org.
Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring provides children with
increased social opportunities, a stronger network of support for their
education and community involvement, and lasting friendship. Adult-child
mentoring pairs meet regularly and long-term. Volunteers are selected to meet
the individual needs of the children served. All services are available to
children and families free of charge. BBBS is a donor-funded organization.
Youth mentoring has been shown to improve children’s school
performance, decrease their alcohol and drug use and physically aggressive
behavior, and strengthen their relationships with parents/guardians and with
peers. In one study, 84% of participating youth reported that their mentor
taught them the importance of helping others.

15 million youth nationwide need a mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters, University of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Iowa State University coach Paul Rhoads are committed to finding mentors for the children in Iowa. Ferentz and Rhoads have issued a friendly challenge against the football coaches of the University of Nebraska, Kansas State, and Kansas University to see which state can recruit the most new mentors. The Coaches Mentoring Challenge will take place from now until November 21. Mentors who sign up in this timeframe will count toward the score for their respective state. The Iowa/Nebraska winner will be announced during the Iowa-Nebraska football game on November 25 and the overall winner will be announced during the Iowa State-Kansas State on December . By signing up to be a mentor fans can not only show their state/team pride but can help impact the life of a child. To inquire about volunteering, contact us. |

Promote it, do it, give it, enjoy it! That’s it. Want to spread the word about WHY Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great organization to support? Here's some sample text to use around your office.
Big Brothers Big Sisters knows that every child can benefit from having a mentor. BBBS volunteers provide youth with additional adult attention, new opportunities, and hope for the future. The majority of BBBS services are provided to kids with significant economic and/or social needs. Families with limited resources see Big Brothers Big Sisters as an important partner in creating more support and opportunity for their children.
As an agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters is always striving to improve the quality and reach of its services. As they look toward the future, they remain focused on a simple, guiding principle: one-to-one mentoring is proven to have a positive impact on youth and their ability to succeed. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ vision is to provide a mentor to every child who needs or wants one.
