WHO WAS YOUR MENTOR?
"When I was a student-athlete at Drake University, the coach of my basketball team my senior year was Lisa Bluder. Although she only coached me one year, the lessons she taught me were invaluable. She was an incredible role model who taught all of her players how to work hard, with integrity and to give no excuses. She also was instrumental in teaching me, as well as my teammates, how to advocate for continued improvement in the quality of opportunities for women in sport and in all areas of society. As a player, she helped me achieve my highest goals; and her belief in me still inspires me today to not only succeed in my personal life, but also in my professional life. I currently work alongside of her and it is my hope that, together, we are also inspiring the young women on our team, just as I was inspired years ago." RAMSES LOPEZ BIG BROTHER and RESEARCH ASSISTANT, INTEGRATED DNA TECHNOLOGIES "My high school football coach was Walt Fiegel at East High School in Sioux City. He was an Iowa Hall of Fame coach, and I was part of the last varsity group of players he coached before retiring. He had a famous quote that he'd say a lot at practice--'Tough times don't last, tough people do.' That quote inspires me to this day." NANCY QUELLHORST PRESIDENT & CEO, IOWA CITY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE "My greatest mentor, my father, teaches more through actions than words. He listens well, respects all perspectives, works hard, and focuses on the positive." | JOHN BACON PRINCIPAL, CITY HIGH SCHOOOL "Dave Bousfield was a true mentor to me. I was the principal of Lemme Elementary and Dave was a long-time veteran special education teacher there. So even though I was actually his boss, he was a mentor to me. He was someone I had tremendous respect for. He taught me the value of listening to people and going above and beyond to serve people, and to demonstrate a genuine, deep caring for other people. I watched him model that. He is someone who was always there for me. I highly respect him and learned from him. He played a very important role in my life." JEFF DISTERHOFT PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNIVERSITY OF IOWA COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION "I’ve been blessed to have three wonderful
mentors over the years – my parents and my wife. To the extent that I’ve
any positive personal attributes they can all be directly attributed to their
compassionate guidance and mentoring. Their collective impact on my life
cannot be overstated, and they have certainly set the bar high for the values
I’ve tried to instill in the people I find myself mentoring to as the years go
by." ABBOTT SCHOOL BUDDIES PARTICIPANT, BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF JOHNSON COUNTY "[My School Buddies volunteer] Dave is a good person to hang around when I am lonely. He's like a big brother. He listens to me when I have problems. He has taught me stuff about social studies. He's good in every way. He's a good role model for me." SALLY STUTSMAN JOHNSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR "My aunt Sophie was my mentor when I was growing up.
She always made time for my twin sister and me. My aunt motivated us to
go to college and instilled in us that we could achieve our goals if we worked
hard. She also taught me to always treat people with kindness and respect and to never think you were better than someone else. She practiced what she preached." |
