Goal
To provide fun and engaging enrichment outside the curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to fourth through sixth grade students who have demonstrated achievement or interest in these areas.
Program Description
The Baywood Enrichment Program is a three-year program is for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who have a demonstrated interest in STEM areas. It is particularly designed to challenge students meeting or exceeding grade-level standards.
Volunteer coaches meet with small groups of students ("teams") for one hour a week during "late start" Mondays for several weeks at a time. The coaches engage the students in fun and challenging activities that aim to sustain and increase students' interest in STEM fields.
For each grade, enrichment in mathematics is offered separately from enrichment in science, technology, and engineering (STE).
Enrichment in mathematics is guided by examples from and exposure to the history of mathematics. Additionally, students practice for and participate in the mathematics contest administered by The Math League. Please visit the Mathematics Enrichment page for more information.
Enrichment in STE includes demonstrations, hands-on learning, challenge-based learning, and project-based learning.
Student Selection & Invitations
The school principal works in conjunction with teachers to identify students who have demonstrated achievement or interest in the areas of science and mathematics. Parents of such students will receive an invitation in their blue folders approximately one week before the start of the program for a given grade.
