Preliminary Dates for Summer courses for 2012 CHAMBER MUSIC 10-14 July 2012 EXTRAVAGANZA 23-28 July 2012 SFORZANDO 31 July-4 August 2012The Harrodian School has told us that they will be starting their own music course at the end of the summer term 2012 and we are not able to hold our course there. We are therefore hunting for other premises to hold it and we will announce the venue here as soon as we know. Overview
The Bayswater Suzuki Group ran three London–based non-residential summer courses in 2011: • The Summer Extravaganza at the Capital City Academy, * the BSG Chamber Music Course at The Harrodian School, • and a Suzuki music course called Sforzando Suzuki Summer, at St Clement’s and St James’ CE Primary School.
The Summer Extravaganza runs from Monday-Saturday in the last week of July. Each year the participants prepare a show based on a different musical or opera and the whole week is dedicated to learning the music, songs and words for the show. Looked at another way, the activities of the Extravaganza are all concerned with eye-hand co-ordination. The 40 participants are normally divided up for the week into four groups by age and sight-reading ability. Every morning each group has an hour each of music, drama, art (in which all the sets and props are prepared and painted) and sport (normally tennis with a LTA coach) or dance, depending on the show. In the afternoon everybody works together to put the show together. On the Saturday all parents are invited to see the performance.
For 2011 it was that great Cole Porter's take on The Taming of the Shrew with Kiss Me Kate. In 2010 we put together an amazing Little Shop of Horrors, complete with man-eating, singing plant; in 2009 we did Lionel Bart’s Oliver!. In 2008 we put on Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, a contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in New York City. In 2007 we did The Sound of Music and the year before that, Singing in the Rain. The 2006 courses were reviewed in the London Suzuki Group Stop Press Newsletter in September 2006 (scroll down to page 6).
The Chamber Music Course is a more intimate course with a maximum of 20 participants at the Harrodian School in Barnes. Everybody plays a movement from a piano trio, string quartet and a duet or other work for their instrument. Jillian contacts all the teachers of pupils she does not know so that she can decide the most appropriate repertoire for them. She also always puts the same age together as far as is possible. This is truly a tailor-made course for participants. Participants also have an hour of musicianship and singing in four or more parts. The Harrodian School is an excellent venue, with a luxurious music building and concert theatre and with beautiful grounds. Participants are able to use the all-weather football pitch which is always a great success!
The Sforzando Suzuki Summer course will take place at St Clement’s School, Holland Park, and will be a Suzuki music course for Pre-Twinkle – end Book 4 violin, cello and piano pupils. The course will offer a private and group lesson, ensemble and group singing lessons. The repertoire will explore both Suzuki repertoire and folk tunes. In the afternoon there will be an art session which will develop ideas relating to the folk repertoire. The course will have 40+ places in the following minimum proportions: 24 violin, 12 cello and 12 piano. Chamber Music Course

No prior experience in chamber music playing is required. Every member of the teaching faculty has experience in teaching or coaching children and teenagers. For the participants, no prior experience in chamber music playing is required. However, each participant will be sent the music for their pieces during the summer term half-term and must know all their notes by the start of the course and must know the piece as a whole by listening to a recording. If you have a major event, competition or exam(s) at the end of the summer term and do not have the time to do the preparatory work then our course may not be for you. In addition, we may ask a small number of violinists to play viola for one or other of their pieces and you will be required to hire a viola for the course. This gives the player extremely useful experience and some make a choice to remain with that instrument after the conclusion of the course.
Chamber music is the ultimate goal of all instrumentalists in terms both of musical and verbal communication. Every
individual in an ensemble has equal importance. Coaching an ensemble
aims to produce a dynamic group working in a concerted way towards a
performance. The course at the Harrodian School
offers a high staff to pupil ratio with each ensemble coached by one
member of the faculty. We also offer stagecraft and, during breaks, we
have use of the all-weather pitch! Jillian speaks to the teacher of
every pupil to establish the pupil's level and skills. The repertoire
and groupings are devised to fit, as far as possible, the needs of the
participants.
Information on the teaching faculty will be available in the new year.

Sforzando Suzuki Summer
In 2012 this will be held from Tuesday 31st July to the 4th August at St Clement’s and St James’ CE Primary School, London W11, with a performance at the end of Saturday morning. Fee: Short day for Pre-Twinkles/Book 1 up until 2.30pm: £245, Full day £265 40 places for pre-Twinkle to Book 4: Violin, cello and piano
Jillian Leddra and Karina McAlpine started this course in 2009. It offers both music and art exploring both Suzuki and folk melody repertoire. They will be inviting colleagues to join them to offer an excellent staff pupil ratio of 1:8 on a course with 40 as the maximum number of pupils. The timetable will run between the hours of 9.00am – 3.30pm from Tuesday – Friday. The short course for Pre-Twinklers and Book 1, however, ends at 2.30pm and higher books end at 3.30pm. A parent or carer must attend with their Short Course children for their entire timetable. Final times will be determined by the intake. We also expect older children to be accompanied by a parent, as, at the very least, an adult must be present during the private lesson to take notes. Any other arrangement must be discussed with Jillian in advance of the start of the course.
Everybody has an instrumental, singing and art lesson and older pupils have an ensemble session as well. The day is structured according to the intake. Suzuki and other repertoire will be performed and ideas derived from the music will be developed in the art sessions. It may happen that certain children get a long timetable break because of the way their timetable has been built. This is unavoidable and common to all Suzuki courses for this level. We are very fortunate in having wonderful amenities near the school of which parents can take advantage. In addition, we show a film for those who prefer to stay in the building.
On the Saturday there will be a concert at 11.00am followed by refreshments. The course will end at 1.00pm. It will be run at St Clement and St James’ CE Primary School which is a wonderful location for courses of this size with a huge and totally safe playground. Parents can park in the playground in order to be able to stay and observe lessons.
