Observing Group Lessons

At what age should my child start to learn ?

Ideally, at three or four years old.

Is there an opportunity for me to observe the Suzuki method in action before committing to individual and group lessons ?

Yes, you can come to St Clements and St James' School, London W11 4PG on the six Saturday mornings during term time to observe group teaching given either by Jillian Leddra or by Emma Butterworth (dates for these lessons are here or see our calendar). You need to complete the form below (word file  or pdf)  and return it to us. To be considered for private lessons with Jillian you have to attend as an observer all six Saturdays of an entire term and you need to make a statement on the reverse of the observer's application form indicating why you wish to have Suzuki lessons. The performance standard of the Bayswater Suzuki Group is very high and the full attendance of group lessons is essential to maintaining this standard. If you are unable to make this commitment, say, because you go regularly to the country at week-ends or are in the French School system, then the Suzuki method may not be for you. To be considered for a place with Jillian (violin) you need also to observe one private lesson and similarly with Emma (for cello). You can organise this during the term you observe by contacting the relevant teacher by e-mail.

Jillian currently has a teaching studio of around 50 pupils and private lesson places only become available if and when someone leaves. In addition, she only starts new pupils in the autumn and spring terms. If you are observing during the spring or summer terms you need to contact her before the end of the summer term (or by 1 July) because she will be completing the timetable for the autumn term at that point. If you are offered a place as a new parent we regret that it is not possible to offer choice with the private lesson timetable which is generally organised by age ie. the youngest pupils have the earlier lessons and the older pupils the later.

The application form is available as a word file or a pdf. Please download this and fill it out  if you wish to come to observe group lessons. Further instructions are on the form.

You need also to look at or download the group lessons timetable to find out where and when Jillian and Emma are teaching.  TO OBSERVE YOU MUST ARRIVE BEFORE THE START OF THE RELEVANT LESSONS.  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OBSERVE A LESSON IF YOU ARE LATE.

Click on the table below to see the Saturday timetable.

If you want to observe an individual teaching lesson during your term of observation please contact Jillian (violin) on jillianleddra@hotmail.com or Emma Butterworth (cello) on ebutterworth1@hotmail.com.

What do I need to do to enable my Suzuki-taught child/ren to join the Bayswater Suzuki Group lessons?

If your child becomes a private pupil of one of the teachers in the Bayswater Suzuki Group, or is the pupil of another Suzuki teacher, then you will automatically be committing to a private lesson during the week AND six Saturday mornings during term time of ensemble playing and musicianship. Group lessons are an extremely important part of learning and performing an instrument and they are a fundamental aspect of the Suzuki method. They are also very
important socially. You simply need to contact Jillian to ask if you can join the group giving her your name, address, telephone, e-mail, the name, age and playing level of your child/ren and the name of your own Suzuki teacher. You need to e-mail this information also to Landa Melrose on landamelrose@hotmail.com.    If you join you will be required to sign a basic contract for group lessons which sets out your responsibilities as a Suzuki parent. To help you understand your responsibilities please read this very helpful and inspiring article written by Dr
Helen Likierman, a former Suzuki parent.

Can my child, who is not Suzuki-taught, join the Saturday morning group lessons to have the experience of ensemble playing?

We regret that we are not able to offer group lessons to non-Suzuki pupils.
