Image 4 - Taking Shape
Preparation Undertaken: One of the branch pieces cut for the previous photograph in this series was taken into the workshop and mounted between centres on a wood lathe. A selection of chisels and other wood tools were used to begin to form a new shape from the branch. The Work area was lit with a single unshielded bulb giving good light to the working area. Settings and Composition: In order to better capture the ambient lighting, I used a 50mm prime lens at f2.8. To achieve a shutter speed that could capture the movement of the wood shavings as they were chiselled from the rotating wood I selected an ISO setting of 400, which gave a corresponding Shutter speed of 1/60th of a second. A tripod was used to remove camera shake under these conditions. The Lathe and the spinning wood are slightly out of focus, highlighting the hand, chisel and rest. The hands holding the chisel are positioned on one of the 4 power points from the rule of thirds. Equipment: Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Lens Settings: Aperture – f2.8, Shutter Speed – 1/60 Second, ISO – 400 Relation to Theme: Something new is beginning to take shape from our tree.

Preparation Undertaken: Having used a selection of coarser chisels, rasps, and other tools to create the overall shape required, the next step is creating the finished surface using a series of finer sand papers. The Work area was lit with a single unshielded bulb giving good light to the working area, but creating deep shadows outside our area of interest. Settings and Composition: Using similar setting to the previous shot, but looking from a different angle, we can see one of the centres about which the lathe turns the wood in the lower left corner of the image, and just see the other out of focus in the top right corner above the hand. I attempted to convey the craftsman working by touch to feel the final stages of creating the object. Equipment: Canon EOS 60D, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 Lens Settings: Aperture – f2.8, Shutter Speed – 1/50 Second, ISO – 400 Relation to Theme: The new Item turned from a piece of one of the branches of the tree nears completion.
