Men of 2 Kompanie, 30th Infanterie Bde / Festung Ehrenbreitstein
Letter on reverse authored in Coblenz by Uffz. Drei?ig on 1.11.1914 with postage cancelled at Ehrenbreitstein the same day. Photogr. Esser & Konen, Koln. Men of 2 Kompanie, 30th Infanterie Bde, pose for a memento photograph having only recently received their uniforms. For one unlucky fellow, his girth proved too large for the outfitters and he never received any trousers and had to wear his pyjama bottoms for the photo. The postcard was stamped at Ehrenbreitstein, which was the location of a fortress (German: Festung Ehrenbreitstein) on the east bank of the Rhine opposite the town of Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The fortress was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1832 and guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been invaded by French troops repeatedly before. The fortress was never attacked. _____________________________________________________________ Research notes: VIII Armee-korps (Preu?en). Bezirks-Kommando: Andernach / Coblenz
