Tribal Book Neccklace 13 December, 2010 The idea for this very tribal-looking book pendant necklace was inspired by a book project we did for my creative process class. I thought it would be interesting to make a miniature book with metal covers, sewn with paper pages. The covers of the book are made out of copper sheet, which I hand-stamped and hammered with an original design. I bezel set a gorgeous, Kingman turquoise cabochon in the center of the front cover, and echoed it with the round turquoise beads in the wire wrapped chain. I added big coral nugget beads, brown turquoise nuggets and small round lapis lazuli beads to compliment the colors throughout the design. The back cover is also hammered and stamped with my makers mark and the year. The pages of this tiny book are hand-stitched with handmade mulberry paper in a beautiful shade of cerulean blue, and the book is sewn together in the Coptic style using heavy-duty, waxed Irish linen thread. I like the Coptic style binding as it can lie flat when the book is open, and the stitching pattern makes an attractive chain stitch along the spine. The covers of the book measure 1-1/2 inches by 2-3/16inches, and the pages are 1-1/2 inches by 1-1/4 inches. The necklace was photographed on another sheet of the same handmade paper as the pages, so you can see the color and texture of the pages better. The chain measures 20 inches for a total length of 22 inches.
