Weather & Tide

Knowing what the weather is going to do is vital for safe watersports. More important is applying this information and designing your activities so that weather is taken into account. This is never simple and can require the application of local knowledge and interpreting differing sources of information. These sites can provide a starting point for this process with practice everyone finds a preference for certain sites - each have their strengths and weaknesses.

General Forecasts - usually too vague to be of interest. Might tell you if the sun will shine but if they start mentioning wind you know that you should be putting dinghies away and getting the windsurfer out. BBC Weather Page for Wales - The local view - useful for next couple of hours estimate. Metcheck - I just love the little animated graphics which tell you what the weather is going to be. Wind is in MPH.
YBW - Yachting and Boating World Weather Website run by publishers of Practical Boat Owner, Yachting Monthly Yachting World.

Wind Information - synoptic charts have lines showing equal pressure - the closer the lines the more the wind.  BBC Atlantic Weather Chart - the large scale view useful for getting an overall picture and estimating the next couple of days weather. BBC The UK Pressure Chart - can help explain why things might happen shortly.
BBC UK Wind Chart - Lots of arrows indicating wind strength and direction I find it too coarse to be of great use but each to their own.
Wind Guru I find this sites wind predictions to be very accurate - use the different models. Weather Underground - Includes actual weather conditions at Rhoose Airport. W Underground History - Scroll down to see the weather trends in graphical form. Xcweather  This one uses St Athan RAF Base and is more graphical
Rainfall Radar - wind is often associated with rainfall so these sites are very good for
Metoffice Radar - the most detailed and regularly updated radar site I have found in UK BBC Rainfall Radar - Not quite as precise as the Met office but I think a nicer interface

Tidal Information - it is nice if you don't have to hike miles through mud to get afloat or come ashore
UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) website - Barry Tidal Predictions or anywhere in UK.
General Information - background stuff and trivia Beaufort Wind Scale

History from Met Office

NOAA Education - OK it's American but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is has a lot of answers
Ant Veal's Weather Page - about all the links you could want to do with weather
