Community Chest

posted 7 Oct 2011 08:18 by Barry Vick

Barry Youth Watersports was recently successful in a Community Chest application for funding towards essential safety equipment. We now have 18 Buoyancy Aids for use with dinghy sailing, canoeing etc a set of four 150N lifejackets for use when powerboating or going further afield and an ICOM VHF marine radio so that we can talk to other water users.

We are planning to do a press announcement at the end of October, when we know where we will be operating in 2012 but already the Radio and a lifejacket have been of use at the National School Sailing Association Team Racing event.

Combined Sailing Course

posted 5 Jul 2011 02:01 by Barry Vick

At the end of June Barry Youth Watersports organised a combined Sailing Course for Scouts and Sea Cadets. The four day course took place using Scout Toppers at the Barry Sea Cadet Boating Base in Barry Docks. Despite strong winds on all of the four days all of the students achieved their RYA Level 2 award and three of the students were awarded RYA Start Racing Certificates, thanks to the co-operation of 7Marine the local RYA Training Centre.

We hope that this is the first of many such courses.

Thanks to a grant from the Community Chest and the assistance of the Barry Sea Cadets, Scout Powerboat Training was able to go ahead on Barry Docks over the Easter Weekend.
A total of nine Scout Leaders gained RYA Level 2 Powerboating Qyalifications and four of them went on to achieve the RYA Safety Boat Qualification.
We are hopeful that this is the start of regular activity on Barry Docks with Scouts, Sea Cadets and Barry Youth Watersports working closely together.
