Belemnia trotschi

2. Belemnia trotschi (family Arctiidae)

Belemnia trotschi caterpillars are fuzzy, nondescript and hard to see, wholly unlike their garish adults.  (This link also shows a hairy yellow Belemnia cocoon and the spotted cocoons of two caterpillar-killing parasitoid wasps.)  They are moths but the adults fly in the daytime.  Their flight style and colors advertise that they are inedible and best be left alone.  They probably are poisonous, but may be just bluffing.

Thirty nine caterpillars have been reared, and their Fusion Table data can be explored here.
