Perfect Society
Final draft:
It has been said many times over the years that there is no such thing as a "perfect society" however, people have dreamed and very many of those people have even come close too. Except, in most, maybe even all, of those societies have ended up with a problem because the truth is, any way you try to put it into a society similar to, or maybe even more advanced, than ours there can be no true perfection. Nothing is perfect. As stated by Orwell, "It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working..."(5). Demonstrating that not even an elevator even works often in this "perfect" society. Also stated by Huxley, "Wretched, in a word."(64). It would be nice, however, if there were a perfect society in existence which could exist naturally in our world which had no problems at all. In the book Brave New World, Aldous Huxley came very close to having the true "perfect" society, but there were many flaws. Even though hypnoædia was used to condition people to want their society and to be happy as stated by Huxley "They thought that hypnoædia could be made an instrument of intellectual education..." (25). The "Society" in Brave New World came very close to achieving the true "perfect" society, because they had a way to even get rid of the "imperfect" citizens of their society, and everyone in their normal society was happy with their life. Yet, even with their "perfect" society, there were still people in the normal society which did not like the utopia, and they had to be dealt with. That, combined with the society having a dictator, the "controller" or "Ford", made this "perfect" society a dystopia.
Many people say that humans were created for imperfection, and that is natural to us because we can live with it and cope with problems and change. They also believe that is why sin was created, because humans need imperfection and instability. Also, that god created us in that way so that if anything were to change in the world we could deal with it, whereas we would not even know how to in a perfect society, and so we could not cope with the change in a perfect society. In a perfect society, control is needed, thus the citizens must have a ruler, or rulers, to control everything and tell them what to do so that they will have no worries at all and they will be happy in doing it. As demonstrated by Lowry, who wrote The Giver, "...stop what they were doing and wait, confused, for an explanation of the frightening event."(1).
In the book 1984, George Orwell created a utopia with a very overbearing dictator called
"Big Brother". In the world of 1984 the dictator, is always watching you at all times through "telescreens" and so rebellion is discouraged by that. Their language was even changed so that rebellion would not even become a thought. If anyone were rebelling, he/she would automatically be caught by the "Thought Police", and many people were caught by the "Thought Police" for rebelling or showing rebellious attitude. This is a world in very bad condition, with little food that needs to be rationed, most everything is dirty, and they have a lot of broken buildings. The world of 1984 is not the "perfect" society at all, and in it, not everyone is happy, so basically, it is a dystopia.
The only way a perfect society could exist for humans would be if there was worry, but then everyone would not be happy as a result of that worry, so the true perfect society could not exist, it would be a paradox. It would be nice for a perfect society to exist, and I am sure that many people would like to be a part of that perfect society, in which all citizens are happy, but it just simply cannot be done. That is why the "perfect" society is only a dream, and not a possible reality. Humans will try and try to create it, but it cannot be done with the present condition of humans in our world today, it would only be possible if humans changed. In our present condition, as humans living today on Earth, we need worry in our lives, we don't know how to live without it. Some people might argue that too much worry has been proven to be bad for the human body, but none at all could be even worse. No one is completely sure how to test life with no worry at all, because it is too hard to be done. Even in the "perfect" societies which were tried to be created, it was the continual thrive to make everyone happy, and to have no struggles at all that ended up causing worry in at least a few individuals of the society and that created a problem, which made it an imperfect society.
The closest thing that human beings could dream of being the perfect society would, in fact, be very similar to the world we have today, with only a few minor changes. It is so because we, as humans, have managed to thrive so much in the world that we live in today. We humans tend to do the best as we are today, in the conditions which we live in today, and in all of our problems, today.

You cannot quote out of context. If this were allowed we can manipulate any thing that anyone says. Your citations do not talk about the concept of perfection, thus you cannot twist them to make them sound like they do. Overall, I think that you need a bit more to back up your argument. Its current state is a bit subpar in explaining why a perfect society cannot exist, and the flaws of said society. -Jack Zilk 6/5/09 12:21 PM MLA Citations
