Staging the birth of the most evil character in the Old Testament book of Judges - Abimelek. Though his birth by Gideon's concubine, Drouma, is only mentioned in passing, it was my intention to show his birth was as violent as his life. I felt compelled to make this piece. All of the casting fell into place. The brilliant model, NeveahLleh was always to be Drouma. It was no surprise to me that in the weeks previous, she told me she had shaved her head. Perfect...We let it grow out two more weeks and took shears to it as if she had cut it off in a fever of madness. Then baby Zane and his mother Nathalie (who plays the midwife) were the next obvious choices. How much can I praise a woman who let's me cover her newborn in fake blood? Then Athena (left) and Sylvie (right) as Drouma's attendants. Sylvie....your astounding face. You became the voice for this piece. Brave women all, in a very very difficult and exhausting shoot.
