I Spy Bag
Take a piece of fabric or even Vinyl, any color and pattern of your choice for the back and front frame of bag. Cut a square inside the front piece smaller so it looked like a mat for a picture frame. Take some Clear Vinyl and cut it to fit inside this "mat" and go about 1/2 inch wider. Sew together on the wrong side (be sure to have the vinyl paper on while sewing or it will stick to your sewing machine. Also be sure to have the stitch very tight or it will be more difficult and not hold the pellets in). Sew the front and back sides together, do not turn inside out...leave about 2 inches to fill with pellets and toys. The pellets are called Polly Pellets. They are clear and very soft. Not sure what they would be called in other countries but bean bags are filled with them nowdays so maybe "bean bag filler"? Fill inside about 3/4 full. Be sure to leave room to shake the toys around inside and have access to see the treasures. Do not overfill! Sew remaining 2 inches. You can cut the edges with pinking sheers or leave blank. I like to fold satin ribbon over mine to make it look more finished, the one pictured abover doesn't have the edges finished as my camera battery died before I could take that photo, but be sure to finish it off so it looks clean. If using Vinyl it looks very chic with pinking or different wavy patterns, I also like to do these in vinyl with different thread colors to contrast the fabric used. In this one above I took the picture before I finished the edge with a pink ribbon. I also took two ribbons and glued them around the window for a fun finish. I have given these as gifts along with a lamanated mini photo of all the toys contained inside. I also have typed out lists of treasures to find inside and find this keeps children quiet because I put almost TOO many things inside (great for longer church services and car rides lol). Make sure things inside are not sharp. I go to the dollar store and find items and my favorite bags are ones that I have collected vintage toys and buttons and such to place inside. I always have a min. of 30 things inside. This bag above is very large and contains 60 items. Some examples of treasures inside (and in this bag pictured) are as follows: Matchbox Pink Car 15 different colored buttons Winnies the Pooh figure Spiderman Figure The Little Mermaid Figure Red lego piece rubber green snake Dinosaur (T Rex) Yello, Blue and White dice Princess crown button Baseball eraser Silver star Nemo eraser mini plastic baby pink and blue safety pin (closed of course) red rubber ball Tigger from Winnie the Pooh figurine Cinderella eraser etc.....have fun with this I LOVE making these!
All Eyes on Little One
Happened across this moment, everyone but the dog was so focused on this little girl. It was a tad surreal, as if all the characters froze for the scene just so I could take this picture. But of course, that's crazy! In fact, I don't think the two men had any connection to mother and child except that they happened to be strolling by, stopping for a second to watch. Nothing special about the composition, it was a quick snap. But I liked that although the point here is simple -- a young girl posing -- the shot is still so full: Older man in baseball cap pushing / holding onto his wheelchair, pauses and turns back to look at girl; Chihuahua staring in opposite direction bracketed by part of the wheelchair frame; adjacent silver haired gentleman holding dog leash oddly straight up in the air rather than loose; mother in heels and mini skirt stooping with camera, purse hanging from elbow + some other fabric from her wrist; little one in white dress and matching white sandals + red socks posing, one foot seeming to be an inch up off the ground in mid-air, colorful rose garden in background + a handful of rose petals that broke free scattered across the cement; the edge of one of Balboa Park's 15 major museums visible across the street sitting on the sprawling site grounds of the 1915 -1916 Panama-California Exposition that eventually gave rise to what is now a much celebrated urban cultural park and local landmark close to the heart of downtown San Diego.
